Jack Wood

1922 - 2013

Jack was a wonderful man he was my surrogate father, he was a good man and  much loved and respected by his family, friends and peers. he had a multitude of talents and skills all of which he unselfishly passed on willingly to others. He was a kind considerate gentleman who will be sadly missed.

He was an incredibly good fisherman he could read the elements  and the conditions of the river or pond, and in a very short time he had worked out the correct tackle setup to catch the fish and he would catch fish! I always marvelled at the knack he had of doing this and in all the years I fished with him I never once beat him!

In his prime he was an awesome darts player and we would travel many miles to pubs and clubs so that he could try his dart skills with competitors of a similar ilk...only on the very rare occasion did he lose.

Jack was an electrician by trade and a very good one he also had the knack to mend anything and had the patience of Job if at any time he couldn't get it to work he would persevere until it did work, there was very little that he couldn't fix.

Add to this his skills as an accomplished self taught artist, I have one of his paintings on my sitting room wall and will never part with it. He became a great expertise at marquetry and made some wonderful pictures he was a very clever man.

Jack spent all his life in and about in Carcroft near Doncaster and in his younger days was a very adept poacher and he knew the surrounding countryside like the back of his hand. I remember on many occasions before he could afford a car we used push bikes to get to and fro for the fishing he always borrowed one of his brother Harold's delivery bikes from his butchers shop at 11 High St Carcroft, Jack never failed to surprise me of the different ways to get to various ponds and river banks, especially using the old field roads of centuries' past which had long been forgotten...but Jack knew where they were and how to navigate them and save miles of pedaling!

It is with a very sad heart that I write this memorialisation of my Uncle Jack he was a super hero to me I have lost count of all of what he taught me, the correct paths to take, what to avoid in life. What he has taught me I will always cherish and pass on to others. All of which I am truly grateful,

God Bless You Jack.
